THE PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF KENTUCKY

The Plein Air Painters of Kentucky consist of a group of artists, who gather weekly during the spring, summer, and fall to paint area landscapes and streetscapes in the Kentuckiana region. We have  two to three critiques a year and sometimes invite other professional artists to critique our work. We are active in many art-related studies and projects, both personal and business related.

We are drawn to painting en plein air (open air or on site), because it is there that we experience (feel and see) the fullness of our natural surroundings; we try to quickly capture the "beauty of the moment" that nature provides and capture the interplay of light on form and are challenged to convey this on canvas or board.  Painting on site gives us the opportunity to observe how foreground, middle ground and background change values and how light actually defines color and form - envoking a response in us.

Some of us have known each other for a long time and have college degrees and/or background in visual arts.  We have varying experiences in life; some of us were art majors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, professors, graphic artists; and some of us have been published in art books and magazines. We have exhibited individually, locally, regionally, nationally and have studied with local, regional and nationally known artists. Our work is in private, corporate and individual collections in the United States.

However, the main "draw" of painting en plein air as a group is to learn and grow together in something we all love to do and have fun at the same time!
